Prateleira (livros): Henry Giroux (educação e capitalismo)

LIVROS DE HENRY GIROUX (pedagogia crítica, sociologia, educação)

GIROUX, Henry. Fugitive Cultures

Fugitive Cultures examines how youth are being increasingly subjected to racial stereotyping and violence in various realms of popular culture, especially children's culture. But rather than dismissing popular culture, Henry Giroux addresses its political and pedagogical value as a site of critique and learning and calls for a reinvigorated critical relationship between cultural studies and those diverse cultural workers committed to expanding the possibilities and practices of democratic public life.

Specifically, Giroux examines the rise of a new kind of visual hyper-real violence directed at the contemporary youth market. This new genre combines the spectacle of violence with an avant-guarde aesthetic that subordinates its often racist and sexist political messages to the hype of nitty gritty realism and aesthetic formalism. These films, such as Pulp Fiction and Kids, erase the notion of racial justice as a significant category and celebrate a glossy form of nihilism and despair as an aesthetic breakthough in film.

Bringing a range of issues together including talk radio, animated children's films, the portrayal of black and white violence, and the rise of the new nationalism, Fugitive Cultures breaks new ground in providing insights into how the culture of violence and racial injustice are shaping the lives of our youth.

GIROUX, Henry. Theory and Resistence in Education.

At the beginning of the new millennium, educators, parents, and others should reevaluate what it means for adults and young people to grow up in a world that has been radically altered by a hyper capitalism that monopolizes the educational force of culture as it ruthlessly eliminates those public spheres not governed by the logic of the market. Giroux provides new theoretical and political tools for addressing how pedagogy, knowledge, resistance, and power can be analyzed within and across a variety of cultural spheres, including but not limited to the schools. A new introduction adds much to the well received first edition. The time for radical social change has never been so urgent, since the fate of an entire generation of young people, if not democracy itself, is at stake. Giroux argues that challenge gives new meaning to the importance of resistance, the relevance of pedagogy, and the significance of political agency.
